The Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) has granted DNG Energy authorization to proceed with its liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operations, the company announced in a statement on Wednesday.
Aldworth Mbalati, CEO of DNG Energy, stated, “This license enables us to address environmental, legislative, and business needs within both the South African and international LNG fuel markets. We are excited to contribute to the decarbonization of the shipping industry by providing LNG as a transition fuel that is safer for marine ecosystems.”
The license allows DNG Energy to establish a floating storage unit (FSU) in Algoa Bay, marking a first for Africa. This facility will enable the company to provide both offshore and onshore logistics, facilitating ship-to-ship transfers for international trading vessels and LNG “milk runs” throughout the country.
The project is expected to secure energy for various industries and households while also creating jobs and fostering skills development within South Africa, the company emphasized.
Mbalati added, “This license paves the way for us to deliver LNG in South Africa soon. Our next steps involve completing the terminal infrastructure at Algoa Bay and finalizing the delivery of our storage and bunkering equipment.”
